Disability is complex, dynamic, multidimensional, and contested.

Over recent decades, the disabled people’s movement together with numerous researchers from the social and health sciences have identified the role of social and physical barriers in disability.

Unit 1 will allow you to familiarise with the concept of disability, understanding its evolution over time from the 1970s to today, highlighting the most present barriers to disability inclusion and at the same time the principles of accessibility to be cultivated and promoted.

Unit 2 will point out the most important European agency and organisations working for the rights of people with disabilities, as well as initiatives and legislation to protect and support their inclusion.
